ST LUCIA LOCAL BUSES
GETTING AROUND ST LUCIA - If you are looking to make St Lucia your home away from home during your stay, the island’s minivan buses are a great way to get to know the locals as they journey to work, school, or just to the market.
St Lucia is an island packed with culture. Island natives have a very rich history that extends well beyond amazing crafts and exquisite cuisine.
To catch a bus in St Lucia, you can wait at one of the marked bus stops or you can simply flag one down. There are a number of stops in and around Castries, and the buses also travel to Cas en Bas, Dennery, Vieux Fort (where you will find Hewanorra International (UVF) Airport), Soufriere (home to the Pitons, Diamond Falls, and many other attractions) and more. With most bus routes running both ways, getting around the island via bus couldn’t be easier. Most hotels will be happy to provide you with bus routes and itineraries, and most buses have the routes displayed in the front window.

Fares for St Lucia buses are quite affordable, with a fare over $5 USD being quite uncommon. In fact, the average fare from Castries to the south of the island, such as Vieux Fort and Hewanorra Airport, is only around $2 USD. Most fares are considerably less, with fares around Castries running only about $0.60 USD. One thing that is important to note, however, is that while getting to most destinations early in the day is simple enough, buses headed to Castries from the southern end of the island often make their last run in the middle of the afternoon. It is important to ask about schedules in advance in order to ensure that you are able to get back to your hotel or other destination in time.
While the timetables may mean double checking your schedule and making certain excursions earlier in the day, there really is no more authentic (and affordable) way to experience St Lucia than through the local buses. Whether you want to go to a local market or explore the island’s history, taking a ride alongside the island’s friendly locals is certain to make your experience more enjoyable!
